We recommend combining our lawn seeding services with soil aeration and verticutting to achieve a healthy, green lawn that sets the standard on your street. A seed is a plant. All plants must be planted. Simply broadcasting seeding on top of the soil is not planting. This way of seeding usually results in only a small precentage of germination and establishment. We only use pure Fescue seed that contains zero crop seed, zero weed seed, zero other types of grass seeds, and minute amounts of inert matter. Our seed is guarnteed to have at least 90% germination with appropriate amounts of water and being planted correctly.
The Basics of Seeding
First, you should know that some periods of the year are better for lawn seeding than others. The seeds germinate best when nigh time air and soil temperatures are consistantly above 55 degrees Fahrenheit and below 100. Fall seeding is best, just at the end of summer when night temps are the highest is when the seed will germinate the fastest, less than 6 days usually. The cooler the temps get, the longer germination will take. After Oct 15th, germination may slow down to 45 days.
Spring seeding is not recommended because of all the negative environmental impacts on the newly germinated grass seedlings. Spring is full of harsh temperature changes, flooding rains, insects, diseases, birds, and animals. Fall seeding sees a dramatic reduction of these issues plus an extra 6 months of growth and establishment time before the next heat wave.
Next, keep in mind that it will take three weeks for the seeds to root and germinate. During this time, it’s important to water your lawn two or three times daily to keep the soil and seeds moist. Furthermore, keep people and pets off your lawn until the seeds have established themselves—typically three to four weeks. Ever fescuegrass plant seed wants to be the size of your fist and will take about 3 years to mature. The typical fescue grass plant may live an average of 6 years. Therefore, you should add a little more fescue seed every year or few years to maintain your grass crop. You should mow 2 to 3 times before winter to help the new grass harden off before freezing temps.
